What I Am
Samuel Marcotte
I am the sudden thought that flashes the mind.
I am forgotten before reaching a notebook.
I am the supernatural urge, that entices your vocal cords in the shower.
I am the camera and its operator.
I am the one facing the camera.
I am the center stage.
I am the birdcage.
I am every compelling tear, every grandeur, every loss.
I am poetry, with all of the
Enjambments and line breaks.
I am a whimsical scale and a heartthrob chord.
I am a captured picture of a day once known.
I am the paintbrush and its recycled water.
I am a blank canvas. I am messy strokes of paint.
I am a novel. I am a story.
I am a voiceless voice that captures my glory.
I am everything beautiful.
I am everything horrifying.
I am everything human.
I took a lifetime to master and
I was written in twenty minutes.
I am Art.
Samuel Marcotte is a First year Honors English Major, hopefully with minors in Communication and Creative and Professional Writing. When not writing poetry, Sam can be seen helping the Abbey Players, writing for the Crier, singing in the Abbey Choir, or working in the NHIOP. Samuel is very grateful for being included in the Humanitas Journal and also wants to thank his friends and family for their love and support.
